Humpback Whale Research Programs

Fluke Matching Internship Opportunity

The Dolphin Institute is offering a limited number of volunteer positions for college-level students or recent graduates to assist in the processing of data collected on humpback whales in Hawaiian waters.

Position description: TDI’s archival catalog of identification photographs of humpback whales spans over three decades and includes over 22,000 observations of over 5,000 individual humpbacks.  This archive is a rich resource for investigating the behavior and biology of Hawaii’s humpback whales. TDI volunteers will have a unique opportunity to work alongside one of our researchers to help uncover the life histories of individual humpback whales by matching photographs of their tail flukes (the “finger print” of a humpback) to our digitized archival catalog and by processing sighting and behavioral data. Other participation opportunities include: community outreach events, updating web content, and developing education materials.

TDI is looking for extremely motivated and dedicated individuals.  Internship openings are available for an immediate start date.  Accepted interns must complete at least 16 hours each week for a period of 2 months. Continuation is evaluated based on dedication and performance.  This is an unpaid position and interns are responsible for their own housing and transportation to TDI’s Honolulu office.

Desirable qualifications: College or post-college education preferred, experience in marine mammal research, previous fluke matching experience, experience working with large data sets and attention to detail.

Application procedure: Send a cover letter indicating your qualifications, why you are seeking an internship with TDI and your dates of availability along with a complete resume. For those applying from outside of Hawaii, include two letters of reference.  Send applications or inquiries by email to Kathryn Rose at krose.tdi@gmail.com

Fluke Matching Volunteer Opportunity

The Dolphin Institute is also offering volunteer positions for the humpback whale fluke matching project. Volunteer responsibilities are the same as above, but volunteers are only required to complete 6 hours per week for a 2-month period.
